Sustainable Value Creation from Biomass

Since 2015, PFI- Bioraffinerietechnik GmbH has been working intensively with PFI Biotechnology on the material and energetic use of biomass. PFI Biotechnology has several biogas fermenters on a pilot plant scale in its technical center in order to be able to simulate biogas production processes in a practical manner.

PFI Biotechnology also tests various processes for the digestion of biomass (specifically: hydrothermal, enzymatic and chemical processes), which enable the material use of biomass or improve its biogas potential.

In recent years, the particular focus has been on the design and planning of power-to-gas plants in conjunction with the biological methanation of hydrogen through the use of biogas CO2.

Our engineers work primarily in the following areas:

  • Planning of ground-mounted photovoltaics (also as agri-PV) to provide electrical energy for water electrolysis
  • Concepts for increasing the energy efficiency of energy conversion (e.g. electrical energy to hydrogen or methane) through sector coupling (use as heat, gas or in transportation)
  • Development and construction of plants for fertilizer production from fermentation residues (digestate, digested sludge, etc.)
  • Planning and realization of plants for hydrothermal digestion (HTD) and process-controlled enzymatic hydrolysis (PEH) of poorly degradable biomass (straw, wood, etc.)
  • Conception and planning of plants for the energetic-material utilization (biogas, lactic acid, biochar, etc.) of organic waste (green waste, organic waste garbage can, food waste)
